Bone Marrow Drive Scheduled for Saturday to Aid Wantagh Student

Eight-year old Kaitlyn Rochel is battling her third round of Leukemia.

Eight-year old Kaitlyn Rochel is in need of her second bone marrow transplant and the Wantagh community is seeking help.

The Wantagh Elementary School student is looking to overcome her third battle with Leukemia which has proven to be the toughest one yet. Rochel is no longer able to attend school, see her friends or participate in activities she loves such as soccer and dance.

Rochel's family and the local community are uniting this Saturday at Wantagh High School for a bone marrow drive in hopes that one attendee could be the match that will save Rochel's life.

"Throughout the past five years Kaitlyn has bravely battled cancer and done so while keeping a positive and loving attitude," said her mother, Carolyn Rochel, in a Facebook invite urging friends to help her daughter. "She has been an inspiration to our family."

John Theissen, founder of John Theissen Children's Foundation, a local charity dedicated to helping sick and underprivileged children, has worked with the Rochel family since Kaitlyn was first diagnosed and feels this weekend's drive is vital to her fight.

"I think kids that go through what Kaitlyn is going through are so strong and innocent," said Theissen, who is sending Kaitlyn and her family on a vacation to Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas once she is in remission. "She doesn't deserve this."

Theissen has seen first hand the effect a battle like Kaitlyn's can have on entire families, something that's not so obvious to an outsider.

"It becomes extra hard on the siblings because they tend to feel left out when all the attention is focused on the child in need," he explained. "We also help the brothers and sisters, the whole family."

The bone marrow drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wantagh High School along with raffles, a bake sale and Hope for Kaitlyn bracelets to help raise money to process each sample.
