Lee Road Students Lauded for Charitable Efforts

Students at Lee Road Elementary School in Wantagh were recognized for their charitable efforts throughout the year at Wednesday night’s Levittown Board of Education meeting.

Levittown school officials lauded the efforts of Lee Road’s “Commitment to Community Service” group during Wednesday’s meeting held at Levittown Memorial Education Center. Some of the ways the student in the program gave back this year included a recycling program by fourth and fifth graders, a peer mediation program where students help other students settle problems, the donation of supplies to a local animal shelter and donating toys for children in need. Students also donated Halloween candy to a local dentist, who shipped it overseas to active military.

Lee Road teacher Kim Welsch said that although teachers and parents help, the agenda and activities planned at the beginning of the year come from the children. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, the group took on a new project, working on making care packages for those in need. Thanks to the generosity of Lee Road families, Welsch said that 50 care packages were made and shipped to families in Far Rockaway, for people who were displaced from their homes.
