Local Students Learn Careers During Sports Atmosphere at Hofstra

Fourth graders at East Broadway Elementary School in Seaford take part in career program prior to Hofstra women's basketball game.

Hundreds of local elementary school students got the chance to combine sports with learning Wednesday.

Fourth graders at at  in Seaford took part in "What I Want To Be Day" on Wednesday morning prior to the Hofstra women's basketball team's special noon tip-off against Central Connecticut State in the New York Life Holiday Invitational at the Mack Sport Complex. The Levittown School District students spent two hours before the Hofstra-Central Connecticut State game learning about various careers such as business, science, communications, recreation and health.

"They had speakers talk about different types of majors they can pursue," said Diane Chapman, a physical education teacher at East Broadway Elementary School. "It's great for the kids. They seemed to have a great time."

Following the career presentations, the participating students cheered the Hofstra Pride onto a 67-60 victory against Central Connecticut State. The students were quizzed with questions on what they had learned during the morning career presentations throughout the game and rewarded with tee-shirts tossed into the crowd.

The Hofstra women's basketball team is off to a 9-2 start and has its next home game this Thursday against Princeton starting at 4 p.m. For further information on the Pride women's basketball team, log onto the Hofstra athletics website.
