Longtime Wantagh High School varsity baseball head coach Keith Sachs was re-appointed to the position last week nearly a year after he was removed from his football coaching duties.
The Wantagh Board of Education approved the appointment of Sachs as baseball head coach at its Feb. 8 meeting when spring coaching positions were voted on. Last year, the school board opted to not re-appoint Sachs for a 20th year as head coach of Wantagh’s varsity football program causing many in the community to speak out against the decision.
Sachs could not be reached for comment on the school board’s decision to bring him back as Wantagh’s baseball head coach, a position he has held since 1994. Sachs helped lead Wantagh baseball to a Long Island title in 2010 and state championship in 1998. He was a standout baseball player at Merrick's Calhoun High School and Hofstra University.
Wantagh resident Kevin M’Aulifee, whose son plays baseball, spoke out in support of bringing back Sachs to the diamond at the school board’s Jan. 11 meeting.
“Keith Sachs is heck of a good guy,” said M’Aulifee. “He is a great coach.”

Mr. McAuliffe is entitled to his personal opinion of Keith Sachs, and I am not disputing that opinion. However, it appears from reading this article that Coach Sachs' appointment as baseball coach was based on Mr. McCauliffe's opinion, or upon some groundswell of similar ('popular') opinion. That notion does not jive with the genesis of the football coaching position at Wantagh, reported above and previously.
Public opinion, no matter how heated or vocal, pro- or con, is seldom, if ever, the basis for making--or not making--coaching appointments in Wantagh.
Personally, I welcome back Keith Sachs as Wantagh's Varsity Baseball Coach. He has earned that appointment.
