Wantagh LIRR Station Escalator Being Repaired

Commuters utilizing the Wantagh Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Station have been without use of an escalator since early September as equipment repairs are made.

LIRR spokesman Sal Arena said the escalator at the Wantagh train station has been out of service since Sept. 4 and repairs are expected to be completed by mid to late November. The repairs include new step chains, controllers and safety switches, Arena said.

The repairs of the Wantagh train station escalator are part of a rehab program the MTA is conducting at various LIRR stations this year. The MTA has been exploring all LIRR escalators in response to an 88-year old woman losing losing her life after having her clothing entangled in treads after falling on the escalator that services the Lindenhurst train station platform.

Arena said the Seaford LIRR Station underwent a complete rehab a few years ago and the escalator there “is in good shape.”
