Wantagh Purse Snatcher Arrested After Police Pursuit

Detectives say Glen Cove man pushed elderly woman to the ground in King Kullen parking lot before fleeing the scene with her pocketbook.

A man who detectives say pushed an elderly woman to the ground in a Wantagh parking lot and snatched her purse was arrested in Levittown Tuesday evening after a police pursuit.

According to Nassau County Seventh Squad detectives, Christopher Nelson, 21, of Glen Cove approached a 73-year-old female victim and knocked her to the ground outside of King Kullen on 1340 Wantagh Ave. As the woman fell to the ground, Nelson forcibly grabbed the victim’s pocketbook from her arm before fleeing the scene, police said. The victim suffered injuries to her wrist and both knees.

Nelson fled the scene in his 2000 Volkswagen Jetta but was apprehended by police at 5:47 p.m. in front of a Denny's on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown. The proceeds were recovered.

Nelson is charged with second-degree robbery, criminal possession of stolen property and reckless endangerment.  He will be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
