True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east of…Read More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

We should be teaching our daughters to love and respect themselves and pageants do not do that.…Read More Feel like a queen? How about a judge or an architect? As the mother of a disabled daughter, I am appalled by this.

I appreciate your point of view, but if I can interpret your statement that they "reject labels…Read More and patriarchal culture" to mean old fashioned and traditional values, then I think you miss the point. If no one challenges the way things were/are, progress can never be made. This is true. However, the manner in which you challenge-respectfully or with total disregard for one's authority- is what I am really referring to. Every great player/coach has "worked" an umpire or referee and they will openly campaign for close calls to go their way. However, when they start blaming the refs/umpire for their failures, it does nothing to help their team or themselves and in fact can work against them on the next close pitch/call. Instead of taking strike 2 down the middle and then fanning at a borderline thrid strike and blaming the umpire for making you swing at that pitch, why not admit that you were wrong and learn from it? Parents that also take part in calling out the umpire are only enabling this culture of "don't worry, it's not your fault." Maybe I grew up in a different generation, but I was always taught never to let the game be decided by a bad call. Win, lose or draw, always respect the umpire, the game and your opponent.

Chris, I agree...and I blame the parents. I dont blame my kids when they whine or complain...it is…Read More representative behavior of the age they are. I wont, however, stand by without telling them to toughen up, suck it up and deal with "life" which isnt fair.
I recently tore into my son for mocking a team that had just beat them because according to him "they were terrible". I told him that he should respect a lesser team that steps up to a challenge and that maybe he and his teammates should look in the mirror!
Not all parents I deal with are so inclined.

Don't underestimate the cost. It would be in the Billions to retrofit and bury the thousands of…Read More linear miles of different cable types. You need to excavate (assuming there is nothing in the way, like existing underground utilities), provide different steel conduits for each utility (gas, electric, fiber optic, telephone, etc.), and keep them far enough apart - or encase them in concrete - to avoid interfering with each other. Plus extra pullboxes/manholes. And all that labor to do the research and the work.
And don't forget either: NYC has underground utilities. Which got just as flooded out during Sandy.
Burying cable is not the cure-all solution. Plant trees between the curb and buildings - that is the sensible thing to do.

Rebecca-NYC underground system was installed by the Pilgrims when they came to the island. In…Read More todays world like in the RICH neighborhoods of LI they already have underground services.
Some years ago the City of Palo Alto, CA VOTED to go underground. They approved a 10 year and only 10 year service charge of $10.00 per month and down came the poles and wires. Since water and natural gas were already there is was a easily done. House values increase, damage from wind and earthquakes dropped and neighborhood ambiance increased ten fold....But then again the people HAVE A VOICE there and sometimes get it right....

National party platforms don't count for very much in local politics, nor should they. So forget…Read More about defining the GOP as the party of "limited government" and having that mantra apply to the Hub situation. As this morning's bipartisan arrests shaped, local politics is about money and access to the ballot. If the right palms had been greased, the right players involved, it would have happened.
Personally, I don't mind that Wang's plan failed, he has no development experience and he's a crook who relied on the statute of limitations to avoid jail. The fact is that his own firm turned around and tried to sue him after he stepped down.
By the way, the GOP is the party of massive government subsidies to industry. Exactly how do you reconcile that with this idea of limited government?

What Nassau needs is an industrial renaissance... Hi Tech, Bio Tech, Pharma... anything that will spur economic success.
BTW why hasn't Nassau explored the possibility of creating a food terminal in Uniondale? That alone would provide hundreds of jobs and reduce truck traffic!
John Rennhack April 8, 2013 at 09:38 pm
That's why a larger development around a new world-class venue would have been ideal.
The problem…Read More with always going for the "hi-tech, bio tech and pharam" is that you're looking at specialized advanced degree jobs. Nothing wrong with that but we need well paying blue collar jobs too. Bring back industry. Why aren't we a leader in next-gen products for automobile, home and aerospace? Have the white collar jobs but also many blue collar jobs in production.
And how about taking the empty commercial lots and vacant big box buildings and create jobs through vertical and greenhouse farming? Year-round agriculture and local access to fresh foods.
Again, instead of being a consumer suburb, become a producer suburb once again.

Hi Mike, bottom line is I see the surge results, so do the people in patchouge and mastic when the…Read More rollers come across from that breach during certain conditions.. Sorry you cant see it 35 miles west .Big fan of science my self, so far they are wrong about it getting smaller. You can go to the Babylon Patch about the breach were Rich H makes the case for this and does so well.
On another note did any body read the NY-Times on the breach last week and how the salinity change can bring in other species not good for the bay and the example was the star-fish. It's all very interesting . Hope we can find the right balance. Take care.

Those of us who don't live on the water DO feel badly about the suffering of storm victims.
