Hundreds Run For John Theissen Children's Foundation Sunday

Wantagh charity held its third annual 5K walk/run Sunday just before Superstorm Sandy struck area.

Hundreds of Long Islanders gathered in Wantagh Sunday morning to help raise money for Wantagh-based John Theissen Children's Foundation (JTCF)- just hours before the damage of Superstorm Sandy.

Proceeds from the JTCF's third annual Freaky 5K run will benefit Theissen's holiday missions, including delivery brand new toys to children in Long Island hospitals and wish-granting for children with terminal illnesses. The overall winner in the 3.1 mile race, which began behind the JTCF headquarters on 1881 Wantagh Ave., was 24-year old Ryan Zillmann of Deer Park with a time of 15:48. The top female finisher was 22-year old Stefanie Braun of Dix Hills with a time of 18:27.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
