Jones Beach Sandy Cleanup Organized for Saturday

Washington-based Ocean Conservancy seeking volunteers for cleanup of local landmark devastated by late October superstorm.

An enviornmental action group has planned a Superstorm Sandy cleanup of Wantagh's Jones Beach this Saturday.

Volunteers from Ocean Conservancy are heading out to locations around New York and New Jersey devastated by the Oct. 29 storm including Jones Beach, which suffered extensive flood damage. Ocean Conservancy and its select corporate partners, LandShark Lager and Altria, will be hosting the beach cleanup as part of “For the Shore”, a coordinated volunteer effort organized by Clean Ocean Action.

Ocean Conservancy officials said they are asking for volunteers to join Saturday's cleanup effort at Jones Beach, which is scheduled to last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cleanup crew will be meeting at Parking Field 2 in front of the consession stand at 10 a.m.

Volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for the cold weather, wear durable boots/shoes and be prepared to get dirty. Gloves are required. Refreshments will be provided.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.

A tantalizing, mind-teasing story about a faceless team with no names who won honorable mention forRead More some project about which we learned absolutely nothing from this article. Journalism 101: Who what, why when and where?
