Legis. Dennis Dunne Holds Property Tax Exemption Outreach Workshop

Workshop at Wantagh Public Library processed tax exemption applications from veterans, seniors, volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers on-site.

Nassau County Legis. Dennis Dunne, R-Levittown, sponsored a Department of Assessment Property Tax Exemptions Outreach Workshop at the this past Thursday.

At the workshop, property tax exemption applications were processed on-site for veterans, seniors, cold war veterans, volunteer firefighters, ambulance workers, individuals on limited income disability and home improvement. In conjunction with these services, Nassau County is offering two types of School Tax Relief (STAR) property tax exemptions: Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR.

This workshop was part of a series sponsored by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, which will be taking place at over 10different libraries until November 4.

"We're helping people save money here, and a lot of money," said Legislator Dunne. "Ask anyone here if they want to pay more taxes, they'll all tell you no.  We've had over 60 people come [Thursday], and they are all just trying to make ends meet."  

Legislator Dunne is also sponsoring the same workshop at the Levittown Public Library on September 22.

Also appearing at the workshop was Randolph Yunker, Director of Communication at the Department of Assessment, who explained services that his office can provide at tax workshops by bringing computer connected to their database.

"The county executive has brought government office operations to the community so that homeowners no longer have to travel to Mineola to file for a property tax exemption," said Yunker.

If you are interested in submitting an application, below are the required documents to bring, depending on what you are applying for:

Basic Star (All homeowners, reguardless of age, annual household income: $500,000 or less).

  • Copy of 2010 Federal or State Income Tax Return

Enhanced Star (Seniors 65 years or older, annual income: under $79,050).

  • Copy of latest recorded Deed
  • Copy of 2010 Federal or State Income Tax Return
  • Copy of Proof of Residency (Drivers License/Vehical Registration)

Low Income Seniors and Limited Income Disability

  • Copy of latest recorded Deed
  • Copy of 2010 Federal and State Income Tax Return
  • Copy of Proof of Residency (Drivers Liscence/Vehical Registration)
  • Copies of all supporting income documentation used to file Income Tax Returns (1099's, Interest and Dividend Statements, etc.)

Non-Income Based Exemptions Documentation for volunteer firefighters, ambulance workers, cold war and veterans are required to bring the following:

Veterans

  • Copy of Deed
  • Proof of Residency (Drivers License/Vehical Registration)
  • Copy of Discharge Papers (DD214)

Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers

  • Copy of Deed
  • Proof of Residency (Drivers License/Vehicle Registration)
  • Letter from Chief of Department listing years of service
