Cubs Graduate to Boy Scouts

Wantagh Troop 189 holds bridging ceremony at Temple B'nai Torah.

Wantagh's Cub Scout Pack recently held a ceremony to recognize members who have moved up to the boy scout level in the next step of their journey in giving back to the local community.

Pack 189 held its annual Blue and Gold lunch on March 27 at in Wantagh. Following the lunch a bridging ceremony took place in which six of the 13 cub scouts in the pack bridged over to Boy Scout Troop 189. With a small, symbolic bridge built for the children, representatives from Boy Scout Troop 189 held neckerchiefs, badges or flags to welcome the young boys into their first steps into teenage years

“We like to celebrate the accomplishments of our cub scouts in Troop 189,” said Jeff Cohen, leader of Cub Scout Pack 189. “ For the boys who have done the requirements to receive patches, and if they're of age, they move on to becoming boy scouts."

With the boy scouts being the “big brother” to the cub scouts, its natural for the youngsters to look up to their older counterparts, as well as emulate them. The boy scouts will often teach their cub companions how to use tools, tie knots and even how to solve day-to-day problems. Both the cub and boy scouts from Troop 189 will be picnicking during the first or second week in June and have many other events planned together.

"The cub Scouts and boy scouts are really all about community service,” said Cohen. “That's the whole point of the club - to help build up these boys into outstanding young men through training, whether that training is from outdoor survival or finding ways to improve their community. The boys are always taught to give back and help make their communities better places in ways small and large."
