Maria Regina Student Named Winner in Animal Essay Contest

Matthew Laraia, a fifth grade student at in Seaford, was one of six winners named in the 2012 New York Humane Society Essay Contest.

The essay contest, which was co-sponsored by Nassau County with the Humane Society of New York, was held as part of “Be Kindto Animals Week.” This year’s theme was, “Pretend you are an animal. Tell humans what they should do to help yourspecies and to make this world more humane for all animals.”

“I would like to congratulate all of our student essay winners," said Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano. "Their thoughts of protection, healing and caring for animals are truly inspiring."

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
