Seaford and Wantagh Hold Memorial Day Parades

Communities honor those who have died for our freedom.

Seaford and Wantagh honored those who have made the ultimate sacrifices for our freedoms with Memorial Day parades on Monday morning.

The and the put on the parades, which featured many community organizations such as the fire and police departments, boy scout and girl scout troops, the Seaford Wellness Council, the Seaford Lions Club, Jewish War Veterans of the United States and the Knights of Columbus.  The and marching bands also performed in the parades.

At the end of the Wantagh parade, Commander Jack Bergersen of American Legion 1273 hosted the memorial service.  He was joined by Wantagh School District Superintendent Dr. Lydia Begley, Board of Education trustee Ann-Marie Sturniolo, Wantagh Assistant Superintendent for Business Dana DiCapua and former Nassau County Comptroller Fred Parola.

"We gather here today to remember all of those who have died for our freedom.  Let's celebrate their sacrifice and honor them as heroes," said Bergersen.

eighth grader Tylar Benedetto read her winning essay on the topic of "why should everyone remember Memorial Day to those in attendance.  Benedetto, along with the sixth and seventh grade winners, were all presented with a $100 check.

"It's wonderful to see our young people active on Memorial Day," said Bergerson.  "You are the future of our country."
