Seaford Public Library Announces "Winter Speaker Series"

Presentations on various topics scheduled at library in next four months.

The Seaford Public Library has announced the presenters for its 2012-13 Winter Speaker Series.

On Dec. 5 at 2 p.m., visual display designer Frank Lazzaro will give a presentation entitled White House Holiday and State Dinner Decorating. Lazzaro will present photographs of when he decorated the White House for the holidays and made State dinner arrangements during the Ford, Carter, and Reagan Administrations. There will also be a floral arrangement demonstration of a sample White House centerpiece he created that will be raffled in a free drawing.

On Jan. 24 at 7 p.m., Harrison Hunt, a retired senior curator of history for the Nassau County Museum System, will deliver a presentation called Long Island and the Civil War that explores the area’s role in the conflict. This talk, illustrated with period images, discusses the local reaction to the war, the units in which Long Islanders served and the home-front activities which supported the boys in blue.

On Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., author Monica Randall will deliver a presentation entitled Gatsby’s Long Island, which is based on her 1987 best seller “Mansions of the Gold Coast”. The program includes rare photos of the sprawling castle that inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”, little known details and photos of the 1955 Infamous Woodward murder case, the mysterious F.W. Woolworth mansion and Ferguson’s Castle built atop a cliff in Huntington that is said to be haunted.

On March 19, Steve Samtur, editor of Back in The BRONX, will give a 90-minute PowerPoint nostalgic retrospective of the borough as it was back in the decades of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. This fun walk down memory lane includes close many never-before-seen photos of the way it was.
