Wantagh Area Gets Sweet for Japan Relief Effort

Local bake sale to raise funds for Red Cross.

In light of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, many Long Island residents are eager to find a way to help those affected by the disasters.  This weekend, local residents can help raise funds, and grab a sweet treat at the same time.

Organized by Wantagh resident and 2006 graduate Katie Ottoson, this weekend’s Bake Sale for Japan will raise money for the Red Cross’s Fund for Japan. Ottoson says that like many of us, she was impacted by the news coverage of the earthquakes and tsunamis.

“I heard what happened in Japan, but until I saw the videos I didn’t realize how bad it was,” she said.  “I knew I wanted to help out in any way I can.”

Ottoson says that the idea for a bake sale came about as a way to get the community involved in the fundraising.  Volunteers will be providing the baked goods, ranging from brownies to cupcakes decorated to look like sushi.

“I figured that having a bake sale would be a fun way to fundraise,” she said. “I knew that it could raise more money than I could ever donate on my own.”
