Wantagh Fire Department Holds Charity Pancake Breakfast

The Ladies Auxiliary hosts fundraising event to benefit child burn victims.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the held their annual
Charity Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, April 3rd at their headquarters on Park Avenue.

The fundraising event was held to help sponsor a child that will be attending the Connecticut Children’s Burn Camp, a program run by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation. Co-Chairpersons Barbara Stone and Dee Bloomfield explained that 100 percent of the proceeds would be donated towards funding a week of camp for a child

burn survivor. The camp costs approximately $2,500 per child and relies on donations, allowing each child to attend free of cost.

The room was crowded with community members enjoying their meals, which also included desserts that were all baked by Wantagh Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary members.

 Bloomfield said that the event gets bigger every year. She also talked about all the help they received to make the breakfast possible. The Explorers, the department’s youth organization, worked as servers both at the buffet line and at the drinks counter.

Among the many helping hands working at the breakfast was Harold Bruechert, who oversees all the cooking every year. Bloomfield called him, “an angel…he handles everything in the kitchen so we can concentrate on everything else.

The pancake breakfast celebrated its eighth year and both Bloomfield and Stone said it was a great way to help out such a worthy cause. and also contributed to the morning by providing orange juice and milk.

 The April 3 event was summed up by 25- year member Mary Ellen Massaro, who said, “we’re a supportive community and happy to help such a great cause.”
