Annual pageant scheduled for Monday evening in Wantagh High School Auditorium.

Local teens will be competing to be Miss Wantagh 2013 during the annual pageant slated for this Monday evening.

The contestants will be taking the stage in the Wantagh High School Auditorium on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.

"Hard to believe that we are getting ready to crown a new Miss Wantagh,” said Ella Stevens, president of the Fourth of July Association President and Miss Wantagh Pageant coordinator. “We are very grateful to Wantagh Schools for allowing the pageant to be held there again this year. With growing interest and support from the families and friends of the Miss Wantagh contestants as well as merchants in the community, the Fourth of July Association would like to invite the entire Wantagh community so that everyone in our town will be able to enjoy this wonderful event.”

The Miss Wantagh contestants have been visiting merchants throughout the community introducing themselves, practicing their speeches and attending rehearsals. Updates on the pageant can be followed on the Miss Wantagh Facebook page.

Stevens emphasizes that the Miss Wantagh Pageant is not defined by beauty with both academic excellence and community service highlighted. She said it is not uncommon to find past Miss Wantagh who participants have continued giving back to their community or have shown leadership qualities in their respective careers.

Last year's Miss Wantagh winner, Hailey Orgass, spearheaded an anti-bullying movement at Wantagh High School.

At the July 1 pageant, the semi-finalists will tell a panel of judges and the audience all about their achievements and aspirations. They will also answer questions, posed by the judges.

“Their talents will not go unnoticed as they have put together a little skit for everyone’s entertainment,” Stevens said.

Unlike other pageants where a winner is declared the same night, Miss Wantagh is traditionally crowned at the conclusion annual Wantagh Fourth of July Parade on the steps of Wantagh Elementary School.

“Please mark your calendars, because you are invited to spend an evening learning what these young ladies, vying for the title of Miss Wantagh 2013, have accomplished,” Stevens said. “Let’s give these young ladies a great show of support for all they have already accomplished and for the great things they are about to do in their future.”
