The Dead Lives in Seaford

Long Island jam fixtures "The Electrix" light up the Sunset Grill.

Cars were lined up along Sunrise Highway as locals packed the in Seaford for a heavy dose of good ol’ Grateful Deadness courtesy of "The Electrix" this past weekend.

For over twenty years, with various lineups, the Electrix have done their job in carrying the jam-band torch from Manhattan to Montauk and back again. On Saturday night Feb. 5 they got down to business by taking advantage of the Sunset’s surprisingly good acoustics and raucous, enthusiastic crowd.

“There’s something about this place,” said Electrix keyboardist Jeff Pearlman of West Hempstead. “It always has great energy every time we come here.”

The energy the Electrix get is only equal to the energy they put out. It’s just that type of shared vibe that drew Steve Cerbone all the way from Wayne, New Jersey to catch the gig with some local buddies. Cerbone had seen the Electrix once before and was immediately hooked.

“It took me three notes,” said Cerbone of the Electrix magic. “I turned to my friends and said, “These guys get it.”

“It” is that Grateful Dead magic, and on Saturday night the Electrix, led by the impeccable chops and guitar tone of Medford’s Jimmy Fleming, were in full sorcery mode.

They stormed out of the gate in classic Grateful Dead fashion with “Jack Straw,” and wasted little time following it up with some of the Dead’s very best bone shaking numbers including the psychedelic country swing of “Cumberland Blues,” and the ever-playful “China Cat Sunflower” followed by a ferocious “I Know You Rider” that had the entire crowd literally jumping off its feet.

Throw in Manorville resident and singer/guitarist Kevin Griffen’s versions of some shredding Eric Clapton-esque blues and Allmann Brothers for good measure, and you have yourself a night to remember.

“They do a great job with the Dead sound,” said Sunset Grille employee Gary Plouffe. “They’re good guys and they draw a great crowd. We’re always happy to have them here.”
