Fundraiser Honors Slain ATF Agent John Capano, Collects Donations for Family

A loving father, a stand up officer, an active member of his community - the number of lives impacted by John Capano was evident Thursday evening as hundreds poured into Wantagh's in his honor.

The 23-year Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives veteran was  trying to stop a New Year's Eve pharmacy robbery in Seaford. The Massapequa resident and was awaiting a prescription for his father in  as James McGoey of Hampton Bays entered the store armed, demanding cash and prescription drugs. As Capano confronted McGoey, an off-duty officer responded to the scene which ended in a shootout killing both Capano and the suspect.

In an effort to relieve Capano's family, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association set up a memorial fund that will directly benefit his wife and two children of Massapequa.

Capano's nephew, Anthony Guerriero, said during the fundraiser that the support his family has seen over the last three months from his uncle's work family and surrounding neighbors has been amazing.

"It's really unbelievable, just overwhelming," said Guerriero, a Wantagh resident. "I think it's a good testament to his life and shows exactly how many people really cared for him, whether in law enforcement, his family or the community."

When asked what he'll always remember most about his uncle, Guerriero couldn't pin point just one thing.

"There's so much to remember," he explained. "He was a consummate professional and an unbelievable family man. I don't think I could ever narrow it down."
