Hop on a nice air-conditioned LIRR train to The City, take in a museum, or jump into the fountain at Washington Square Park or Battery Park. Or, ferry over to Liberty Island and Ellis Island.

Yes, both fountains, Washington Square Park and Battery Park are great for cooling off by going in a getting wet, which is heartily encouraged. The Washington Square fountain is a classical fountain with a huge basin pool, and a gigantic water spout, http://www.trekaroo.com/photos/0003/0308/washingtonsquarepark_fountain1.jpg The Battery Park fountain is meant to be walked across, with random water spouts popping up surprising people...http://www.spec-net.com.au/press/0808/images/joh270808_img01.jpg
