IRS Strips Non-Profit Status of Wantagh and Seaford Groups

More than 30 organizations affected by automatic action of the IRS.

Several organizations from Wantagh and Seaford had their tax exemption status revoked by the Internal Revenue Service last month.

Over 275,000 organizations throughout the country were affected by this move, including nearly three dozen in Wantagh and Seaford. According to the IRS, a tax exemption status is revoked when organizations do not file required reports for three consecutive years.

Wantagh American Legion Treasurer Ray Cotti attributed being on the IRS list to the agency getting its ID number mixed up and said the issue has since been resolved. “They had the wrong ID number,” said Cotti. “We’ve been filing all along.”

Wantagh Preservation president Tom Watson said he is in the process of sending the form to the IRS for reinstatement of the group's non-profit status.

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 requires almost all non-profits to file annually. Though the IRS said that many of the organizations included in its list are probably defunct, there is a process online that allows for a reinstatement of the tax-exempt status.
