Petco to Open in Wantagh

National pet retailer signs lease to occupy former Rite Aid building in Willow Wood Shops.

The Willow Wood Shops in Wantagh will soon be getting a new national retailer.

Petco has signed a long-term lease to occupy the former Rite Aid building in the shopping center located off Wantagh Avenue in the Levittown School District. Wilbur Breslin, president and CEO of Garden City-based Breslin Realty, which owns Willow Wood Shops, said the lease is for 20 years.

“We think they will do extremely well,” said Breslin of the pet chain. “We think it’s a good replacement for Rite Aid.”

The closest current Petco stores to Wantagh are on 5500 Sunrise Highway in Massapequa and 2965 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown.

The Petco media relations office did not respond for comment by press time on what their timetable is to open their new Wantagh store.

The 11,500 square-foot space Petco will operate was vacated by Rite Aid in December 2010. The former Rite Aid building, located in the northernmost section of the Willow Wood Shops, was last utilized as a temporary Halloween store last fall.

The 57,000 square-foot Willow Wood Shops owned by Breslin also includes  and a Starbucks in January. A GAP and GAP Kids store in the shopping center in February and Breslin said new retailers are expected to sign leases for the clothing chain’s vacated space in the next three months.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.
