Sound Off: Starbucks Keeps Smokers 25 Feet Away

The intent of the move is to expand the indoor non-smoking policy to the outdoor seating areas.

Starbucks has introduced a new plan that would keep people that are smoking at least 25 feet away from the premises, including the Wantagh location.

According to the Associated Pressthe intent of the move is to expand the indoor non-smoking policy to the outdoor seating areas.

"If there were any concerns, we would hope to resolve it amicably," Starbucks spokeswoman Jaime Lynn Riley said, referring to a customer who might be smoking within the restricted area.

According to Roger Keith, the manager of the location at 2015 Merrick Rd. in Merrick, signs have been put up to enforce the new rules, and there's been no negative response to the change thus far.

Tabetha Ochtera, who works at the Wantagh location, told Patch the store is enforcing the new plan as well.

According to the Nassau County Department of Health's website, "For the most part, smoking inside in public, or at any workplace, is not allowed..A notable circumstance where smoking is restricted outdoors is in the outdoor seating area of restaurants, where smoking is permitted, but only in 25 percent of any such seating area."
