Wantagh Chamber of Commerce Selects Joe Iavarone for Annual 'Good Guy' Award

President of Iavarone Bros. to be recognized for giving back to Wantagh community at Nov. 7 fundraiser.

The Wantagh Chamber of Commerce announced last week that Iavarone Bros. President Joe Iavarone has been selected for the organization’s annual “Good Guy” Award.

Iavarone will be presented the “Good Guy” Award at a fundraising dinner scheduled for Nov. 7 at Oheka Castle starting at 6 p.m. Proceeds generated by the event will benefit the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce Charitable Community Foundation, Inc. The foundation is a 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to the support of charitable and community causes and events throughout Wantagh, with additional funds to support local student scholarships, assistance in times of tragedy and community enhancement programs.

Iavarone Bros. is a gourmet grocery store located inside the Cherrywood Shopping Center on 1166 Wantagh Ave. There are also Iavarone locations in New Hyde Park, Woodbury and Maspeth.

From the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce:

“The Chamber’s 2012 nomination of Joe Iavarone reflects his long-standing, consistent support of Chamber and community events, fundraising and philanthropy. A former Chamber Trustee, Joe and Iavarone Bros. of Wantagh have received the organization’s accolades for both Small Business of the Year and Business Beautification. His consistent philanthropic efforts have benefitted schools, libraries, scholarship programs, civic and cultural organizations. He has also endowed many youth-benefit programs, while raising funds for UPCN, March of Dimes, Autism Speaks, Juvenile Diabetes research, and Children International.”

Established in 2010, the Good Guy Award Program acknowledges Wantagh’s residents and businesses who have demonstrated a high level of charitable generosity and community service.

”Our community is blessed with many adults and young people alike, who elect to devote much of their personal time and resources to neighbors in need,” said Wantagh Chamber of Commerce president Chris Brown. “They share a common bond of caring and a desire to offer assistance to those less fortunate. They are Wantagh’s ‘Good Guys,’ magnanimous folks our Chamber seeks to recognize and thank.”

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.
