Wantagh 'Good Guy' Award Ceremony Rescheduled For Jan. 16

Fundraising dinner that will honor Iavarone Bros. President Joe Iavarone had been postponed from November due to Superstorm Sandy.

The annual Wantagh Chamber of Commerce “Good Guy” Award Ceremony originally scheduled for this past November will now take place Jan. 16 due to damage to area caused by Superstorm Sandy.

This 2012 “Good Guy” Award is being presented to Joe Iavarone, president of Iavarone Bros. Established in 2010, the Good Guy Award Program acknowledges Wantagh’s residents and businesses who have demonstrated a high level of charitable generosity and community service. The fundraising dinner where the award will be presented is scheduled for Jan. 16 at Oheka Castle in Huntington starting at 6 p.m.

Proceeds generated by the Jan. 16 event will benefit the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce Charitable Community Foundation, Inc. The foundation is a 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to the support of charitable and community causes and events throughout Wantagh, with additional funds to support local student scholarships, assistance in times of tragedy and community enhancement programs.

Iavarone Bros. is a gourmet grocery store located inside the Cherrywood Shopping Center on 1166 Wantagh Ave. There are also Iavarone locations in New Hyde Park, Woodbury and Maspeth.

“Joe has been a long--‐standing, consistent supporter of not just the Wantagh Chamber, but community programs, events, and fundraisers,” said Wantagh Chamber of Commerce President--‐elect Denise Langweber. “His frequent philanthropic efforts have also benefited many schools, libraries, scholarship programs, civic and cultural organizations and houses of worship throughout Long Island.”

In addition to his support of Wantagh community programs, Iavarone has endowed many youth benefit programs, such as UPCN, March of Dimes, Autism Speaks, Juvenile Diabetes and Children International.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.
