Cherrywood Auto Sales and Service proposing relocation to former Getty gas station site on 1386 Wantagh Ave.

A Wantagh Avenue used car dealer/repair shop is preparing for a short move down the road.

Cherrywood Auto Sales and Service on 1200 Wantagh Ave. is planning to relocate to the site of an old Getty gas station at corner of Wantagh Avenue and Beltagh Avenue. The move 0.3 miles south to 1386 Wantagh Ave. is needed due to impending arrival of TD Bank at the current Cherrywood Auto site, according to the business's owner Harry Rotenberg, who is in contract to purchase the 12,765 square-foot former Getty property for around $650,000.

Rotenberg’s attorney Michael Mirotznik and architect James Prisco presented plans for the proposed new Cherrywood Auto during Wednesday night’s  meeting held in the .

Mirotznik said that 10 cars would be stored on the new property compared to 14 at the current Cherrywood Auto site located by the corner of Wantagh Avenue and Jerusalem Avenue. The proposal would also only have an entrance on Wantagh Avenue and not Beltagh Avenue, according to plans presented at the WSHA meeting.

Rotenberg has plans to meet with the Wantagh Board of Education to further discuss the proposal. The business would be located a stone’s throw away from both and on Beltagh Avenue. He said the hours of operation would be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Before Cherrywood Auto can make its move, Rotenberg will need to go before the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) for a parking variance. Mirotznik said he hopes to have a zoning board hearing date in the next six to eight months.

Construction on the property would take about eight months once necessary approvals are in place, Mirotznik said.
