The American Spring

In the dark of winter, spring is awaited with eager hope. For some, their hope is more desperate. Yet the coming of another American Spring will not be welcome by all.

The Occupy movement captured many of the social and economic issues nagging at our national conscience.  I attempted to encapsulate some of the diverse interests that comprise this movement which has brought back to our cities the protests and mass demonstrations that were emblematic of the sixties, the decade when I came of age. This video is comprised of images I made in Union Square Park, Manhattan, in the spring of 2012.

Spring is just around the corner!

The other historic "Springs" that have occurred around the globe are not on par with the US Occupy movement. Generally:
The others Springs resulted in changes in govt form, structure, rulers. The other Springs had a specific purpose, manadate, desired outcome The other Springs were not comprised of the "dropout" element of society. In addition, many of the places that did have successful movements are even worse off than they were before the movements began. It isn't revolution that is bad per se, but the desire for 'something else', 'change', etc has to be defined as a positive series of steps towrds a specific outcome. The outcome cannot be some vague pothead's dream of 'things should be different'

“Dropouts”, “vague potheads”?
So how would you characterize the crowd at Enron or Worldcom and their auditors, the good old boys at Lehman and Goldman, the parade of traders and hedge fund guys going to jail for insider trading, Madoff, or my absolute favorite, Mozilo of Countrywide? American heroes?

Well, vague (your word, V) or diffuse (my word), their objectives do appear to lack specificity or focus. But I think that is a clever ruse. By appearing nebulous, they avoid the specter of being nefarious.
They, this movement, are able to fill a large metropolitan park with people of many stripes carrying many gripes about this, that, and some other things. Once gathered, they can then be cloaked as ninety-nine percent-ers, and the organizers, the money behind the movement, are then free to spin their numbers toward their true, underlying agenda or objective. I am sure there is a specific outcome, we just haven't been clued-in yet. The video images were made in Union Square Park. Some of the participants are students or faculty at NYU, Cooper Union, Baruch, Pace and The New School. Certainly, viewers are free to assume some of them are drop-outs, but I would generally disagree with that assessment. "Something different" is a good descriptor for change, in general. It (they) would seem to be trying to put the monkey on the backs of our politicians to go figure what something different ought to look like, to sound like, and to feel like. That is different than trying to take over the government and then making those kinds of mistakes referenced around the Mediterranean, the same kind of mistakes made in the aftermath of the capture of Damascus by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) way back in 1918.

So to sum up, you think it was a designed plan by the protestors to take the 'system' by surprise by appearing to be without a stated goal, plan, purpose?? For real? They had a secret meeting at which they decided to confuse the world order by appearing to be disorganized and aimless?
Chris Wendt December 31, 2012 at 02:19 pm
The protesters? No. The money interests behind the movement behind those protesters.
I did not say that their goal was to "take the 'system'". What I did say was that their goal "is different than trying to take over the government", and that "we just haven't been clued-in yet" (to what is their specific objective). I certainly appreciate your point of view, but request that you please avoid changing my own words and their clear meanings. Thanks, V..

I wonder if any of the hippies found a job yet so they can contribute something to society.
EJ48 December 31, 2012 at 07:21 pm
You mean like trading stock on inside information gathered via "information networks", or packaging and selling worthless securities, or peddling nuclear mortgages or running a Ponzi scheme?
Wall Street, corporate America and big government are a cabal feeding off each other and everyone else not in on the game (ie the 99%). Things WILL change sooner or later. The only issue is whether it's gradual and manageable or with a big bang.

I know of one job seeker who has not found a job yet, and that is because I have to continue working instead of retiring because I cannot afford to retire and pay the taxes, here, yet, I cannot sell my home because the housing market is depressed in large measure by the high taxes, here. So as long as I have to work instead of retiring, someone else who has an undergrad degree will continue to live at home with mom and dad, because I remain in his or her career position.
I suppose if they live at home long enough, and can't put their sheepskin to work and start repaying their college loans, they could become hippies, or protesters, and give the impression of being "aimless" by choice instead of as the result of the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

@Chris, I watched your video, ok for the most part, but I have to put in my 2 cents, and here it is:
You say; "The video images were made in Union Square Park. Some of the participants are students or faculty at NYU, Cooper Union, Baruch, Pace and The New School." I say, not one word is spoken or person indicates, other than your information, that your statement is true or relevant. No one says "I attend Cooper Union" or "I am (Phil Aglassof) a faulty member at NYU and am here to support......" or "I am (Judy Bloom) an NYU student and here are my thoughts." You will tell me that this what they said to you and that is fine, but it also holds no water. If you are going to continue to do what you do, please make sure that you actually have facts and can verify your sources.

Chris, i find it odd that you are assuming the blame for an individual not having a job because you are still working due to the reasons you stated. Odd and presumptuous. MANY grads are jobless and living @ home because of poor choices in majors, no internerhsip expereince, no reasonable salary expectations, no previous work expereince now finding themselves in fierce competition with exepreinced individuals who were downsized. There are a plethora of reasons why many "adult KIDs are still living at home . However people staying in their jobs longer due to the economy is not a major factor for the young adults not being able to find employment. thats just a cop out. MANY people are unemployed NOT because your not retiring, but perhaps because the economy is in the pits. What they should be doing is seeking ANY job in ANY field to gain SOME sort of expereince to add to their blank resumes. As someone who has hired many levels within the IT industry i would take those just graduated blank resumes with absolutely no work experience no internships no ATTEMPT at employment even in an unrealted field etc. and circular file them the only thing it shows is a lack of intitiative and drive.

@ Lorraine re: "... odd that you are assuming the blame for an individual not having a job because you are still working...."
"Blame" and "assume" would not be appropriate words to convey the reality that, were I financially able to retire then I would have left my job for another person to step into. I cannot retire and maintain the standard of living my wife and I aspire to, and thus my health and other circumstances afford me the ability to continue to contribute in my job while maintaining our current standard of living. As long as I am in this job, someone else is not. No blame, no assumption; fact. As 2013 has started, I have had to reduce my 401k contribution rate by 2% (percentage points of my salary) to compensate for or offset the 2% increase in FICA withholding that starts immediately, and independently of the so-called fiscal cliff. So, not only will I be kicking-in two percent more of my salary toward Social Security, during this year I will also have to pay income tax on an additional two percent of my salary formerly sheltered in my 401k plan. My wife will receive a miniscule increase in her SSI benefit starting this month, which will have been totally wiped out (and then some) by the increase on my FICA witholding. There is nobody to blame, really. Only there needs to be different people for us to elect to represent us in the future. I mean, to actually represent us in the governing of our nation.
Lorraine DeVita January 4, 2013 at 07:09 pm
Chris, I am not debating WHY you are arent retiring , i m debating & questioning your statement that your position would be filled by a new hire/ recent grad. People assume that if one person retires or is excessed ANOTHER will fill their shoes. However in most cases in a corp environment that may not be the case. the position could be absorbed into other titles, the postion could be downgraded, or not even filled. I totaly agree the choice to retire for anyone is based on financial considerations, my husband is also comptemplating retirement, however he is holding out till AFTER he is 66 for financial reasons . As to another new hire filling his position , that is highly unlikely , companies will as always make the decison based on "NEEDs of the business".hiring someone off the street is not often the most viable right choice for many corps. Therefore it has no impact on the current unemployed grads who you refered to. Many of whom have a plain vanilla typical BA or BS degree with no practical expereince in any marketplace. By remaining employed he is NOT taking a job away from anyone nor would i offer are you. People leave the workforce everyday on many levels & many of those positions especially those of experienced individuals are NOT being filled & certainly NOT by new hires. Corps are "right sizing " which means they arent backfilling, on the contrary they are just adding MORE work to the ones left. Companies today are numbers driven to do more with less.
Chris Wendt January 4, 2013 at 07:59 pm
@ Lorraine re: "... I am not debating WHY you are arent retiring ...."
Neither am I, so we are apparently on the same page. When I leave this job, my company is obliged to replace me, under a variety of regulations. At that time, there will be person coming into our company who is not presently employed here, who will replace me. There is a term, 'POP', presently growing in popularity in the corporate world: "Pensioners on the Payroll". This term is generally regarded as one of the impediments to employment growth and career advancement in America.
Lorraine DeVita January 4, 2013 at 08:45 pm
Chris, Ok I didnt understand that there is a regulation that states in your industry that a new hire replace you. You werent clear on that. What industry are you in?
Lorraine DeVita January 5, 2013 at 02:40 am
POP= is eradicated by FORCED MANGEMENT PLAN- FMP incentives include but are not limited to six months to 1 yrs pay as well affording them the opportunity to go on unemplyment. This is being offered by many many corps. - which is a nice way of saying your old get out you cost us too much money. lol.. however as the ones left behind will tell you they then dont typicaly REPLACe the retired person they simply "absorb the work" I can name you several fortune 50 companies who subscribe to this FMP or weeding out the oldies and some of the non performers.under the guise of "we are right sizing "
AT&T, Verizon, IMB, HP, CITI bank, Chase, BOA, the list goes on Chris.I can also tell you VERY rarely if EVER do they go to the streets to replace these people, in some cases entire business units are dissolved people lose jobs and the business or WORK is sold to a third party to undertake. aka outsourcing either here or overseas, which is infinitely cheaper then employing people on payroll with benefits, pensions etc. It all about MONEY and profitability.
