Denenberg Pushes for Funding Towards Access Road

Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) requested in a letter to County Executive Edward P. Mangano on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, a change to the 2013 Capital Budget for Nassau County to include $650,000 for the construction of an emergency access road for the Seaford Harbor School in Seaford.

Seaford, and other communities south of Merrick Road, suffered a tremendous amount of damage following Superstorm Sandy.  It is almost one year after the storm hit, and many south shore communities still face a long and challenging road to full recovery.  Many of Legislator Dave Denenberg’s constituents are counting on the assistance of insurance companies, FEMA, NY Rising and other types of assistance to rebuild their properties.

In order to prepare for the future by fortifying the south shore’s infrastructure in preparation for the next big storm, Legislator Denenberg is asking that measures be taken towards building an access road for the Seaford Harbor School, which is in dire need of funding.

“It is crucial that we take steps now, while we have the chance, to prepare for such catastrophes,” said Legislator Denenberg in his letter.  “The Seaford Harbor School is in dire need of funding for an emergency access road.”

Over 600 students and staff occupy the building, and currently there is only one, congested road for outbound and inbound traffic.  A newly-constructed road would “alleviate congestion and provide a safe and efficient means of evacuation” for the school, the letter stated.

This project should also qualify for federal reimbursement funds under FEMA, Community Development Block Grant and/or the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program.  The property adjacent to the school, by which the access road is located, is within the county’s jurisdiction.
