PHOTOS: Dangerous Jones Beach Tide Draws Curiosity Seekers

Waves barrel up on shore hours before Hurricane Irene gets set to strike area.

In the hours leading up Hurricane Irene striking Long Island, many local residents flocked to to catch a glimpse of the large waves pounding the shoreline.

A high tide early Saturday caused a roughly half mile long "lake" between the Jones Beach Field #6 parking lot and the ocean. The New York State Parks Department Jones Beach for Hurricane Irene by removing all beach equipment and setting up sand walls in hopes of preventing major flooding.

Jones Beach State Park was closed off to the public mid Saturday afternoon.
