Power Outages Linger After Hurricane Sandy

Residents attempt to dig out after storm as thousands are still left in the dark.

The worst of Hurricane Sandy is gone, but thousands of Wantagh and Seaford residents are still without power after flooding and strong winds ripped through the area.

According to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Storm Center Outage Map, 3,883 Wantagh residents are without power, while 1,731 Seaford residents remain out as of Oct. 31 at 10:20 a.m. LIPA also reported 5,473 outages in North Wantagh. 

Island-wide, 866,070 LIPA customers remain in the dark.

To report an outage to LIPA, call 1-800-490-0075 or text 'REG' to 695472 (myLIPA) and then 'OUT.' For more important emergency contacts, tips and links, click here.

In a statement released Sunday, LIPA told customers to "prepare and plan for power outages, which based on the current track could last between 7 to 10 days."
