Thunderstorms Cause Delays to Local Football Schedule

Wantagh game at Elmont halted at halftime and Seaford-Locust Valley contest was delayed in third quarter due to lightning.

The severe weather that hit the Wantagh-Seaford area late Thursday afternoon has impacted two local high school football games.

The Wantagh football game at Elmont was called at halftime with the Warriors trailing 6-0, and will be completed sometime in the next few days. The lighting began to strike as both teams were on the field getting ready for the second half. Both coaches are trying to determine when the second half will be played since no high school games in Nassau County can be played Friday night or Saturday due to the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

Seaford's home football game against Locust Valley, originally scheduled for 7 p.m.,, was moved up to 4:30 p.m. in anticipation of the oncoming thunderstorms. The game was stopped with 9:51 left in the third quarter and Seaford leading 28-0. After a lengthy delay of nearly two hours, the game resumed once lightning cleared the area with Seaford going onto to win the game 41-14 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
