Two Local Fundraisers Postponed Due to Hurricane Irene

Benefits scheduled for Saturday will be re-scheduled because of stormy forecast.

Two local fundraising events scheduled for Saturday have been postponed due to the barreling up the east coast on its way to the Long Island region, which has prompted for Wantagh and Seaford residents who live south of Merrick Road.

One of the cancelled events is a that was scheduled for Behind Bars Comedy Club in Wantagh Saturday night to benefit Port Jefferson resident Jim Croce’s battle with a rare form of cancer. Comedian Justin Thompson, who was organizing the benefit, said it would be re-scheduled for next month but the exact date is not known.

Another Saturday fundraiser called because of Hurricane Irene is a community garage sale benefit that was to take place starting at 9 a.m. on 2291 Jackson Ave., Seaford.  Proceeds from the garage sale were going to go to Save Seaford Sports, an organization  to raising the $141,000 needed to restore the  winter and spring athletic teams after they were cut from the budget.

"As much as we wanted it to go on, with the recent mandatory evacuation south of Merrick Road, we must postpone,” said Price.
