Wantagh and Seaford residents could feel some shakes in the ground Tuesday afternoon following a reported 5.8 earthquake in Virginia that was felt in New York as well as Washington D.C. and Ohio.

The effects from the Virginia earthquake hit the Long Island region just before 2 p.m.  and during the next hour over a dozen local residents posted comments on the Wantagh-Seaford Patch Facebook page about what they felt.

One resident from Seaford, Bob Grigonis, said on Facebook he woke up from a sound sleep during the earthquake and that his entire house started to shake.

The Long Island Rail Road said most train service was unaffected by the shaking felt in the region but the JFK AirTrain was temporarily suspended while the tracks were being inspected. Control towers at JFK and Newark Liberty airports were evacuated.
