Suozzi: Our Message Wasn't Compelling Enough

The Democrat took to Facebook and said Nassau County is in financial trouble.

Two days after Tom Suozzi was trounced by County Executive Ed Mangano, the vanquished Democrat thanked his supporters and added that he lost the election, in part, because his message was not simple enough.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Suozzi said Tuesday was "a crushing loss."

"Ed Mangano and the GOP's straightforward and simple message clearly resonated with the voters," Suozzi wrote. "We had good candidates and a well run campaign that worked hard and ran well. Our message, while accurate, was simply not compelling or easy to understand."

Suozzi also said Nassau's financial outlook was dire, because the budget isn't balanced, property taxes are high and the assessment system is broken.

"Our plan to balance the budget, fix the assessment system and grow responsibly in the future is credible and really the only long term solution. But ... our message takes a paragraph and not a phrase or sentence to convey," Suozzi wrote.

Suozzi was trying to win back the job he held for eight years before he was upset by Mangano in 2009.

Nassau County voters overwhelmingly sided with Mangano again. The Republican earned the vote of about 60 percent of voters.
