Help Fund Scholarship in Memory of Wantagh Student

Help area residents in need through GoFundMe.

The mother of a Wantagh student who was struck and killed by a car three years ago is looking for donors to a scholarship fund created in her daughter's honor.

GoFundMe user Sandy Lee Vega created the fund to raise $10,000. As of Tuesday, she's raised $2,520.

The page reads:
Hi I'm Sandi Vega, Brittany's mom. My daughter Brittany was killed Sept 22, 2010 yet it seems like yesterday. She was walking to school the 3rd week of her Freshman year in High School when she was hit by a car crossing the highway that divides our home from her school. She was supposed to be riding the bus but for some reason we will never know, she decided to walk against our rules. Brittany was not a rebellious, troubled child by any means. She was a gifted child who excelled in anything she did. She played guitar and could read music since she was 9, sang, was an honor student and earned her Silver Award in Girl Scouts. She could draw beautifuly and was very artistic. Mostly, she was a girl who befriended anyone who crossed here path regardless of their "status". Gay, unpopular, shy, an outcast...it didnt matter to Brittany. She was known to always be smiling in the hallways in her school lighting up the room everywhere she went. Brittany happened to cross this major highway in an attempt to see her Art teacher before school started. She was supposed to have her friend meet her and cross her over the highway. Later we found out he texted her that he over slept and couldn't get to her in time. She had already left and she was at the corner about to cross. He offered to have his dad get her but she never responded. She must have figured she would just cross by herself but never made it. She was actually one step from safety when the car clipped her and she went flying landing seventy feet from the crosswalk. It seems she crossed the highway like you would cross a side street, looking both ways and running across when the coast was clear.  Unfortunately a car was coming in a blind spot she couldn't see, blocked behind a car she did see. The driver also had the same car blinding him from seeing her too. Brittany went into cardiac arrest as she laid there waiting to be helped. No one was there to help her. The driver didn't know he hit someone until he drove back around to see what the noise was. All awhile my daughter layed on the sidewalk next to the gas station as people kept pumping their gas. There wasn't anyone there and the driver was scared to touch her.

Brittany's life was taken too early. She had so much to give. We are all hearbroken and she has left behind five siblings of which one was born ten months after her death at excactly 9:22am. The irony....Brittany was killed on 9/22! He is a blessing sent from above and has helped us all through what has been the most trying time in our lives.

Any proceeds from www.gofundme.com will go towards helping children with Brittany's qualities get money for college. Brittany had wanted to be a Forensic Scientist and she would have been graduating next year. College is expensive & I'm in hopes that we can give out a sizable scholarship to some deserving children. One day, if enough funds come through, i'd like to do some other great things in my daughters name. The possibilities are endless.
