Area Residents Raise Money in Jones Beach Cancer Walks

Breast cancer event raises more than $3million

About 60,000 people took part in this weekends Making Strides at Jones Beach Walk.

The American Cancer Society event raised more than $3.1 million to fight breast cancer.

Among those who took part in the walk was Mary Anderson, a meat cutter at the Wantagh King Kullen, whose 82-year-old aunt is a 30-year cancer survivor. Another   of her aunts had  a double mastectomy.

But Anderson, a member of UFCW Local 342, who helped raise $6 million selling food and T-shirts said that anyone can get the disease.

"This is not just something that affects women,” she said. “Men are affected by this terrible disease, too.”

Earlier this month, more than 7,500 residents took park in the annual pancreatic Cancer research walk. Massapequa resident Elizabeth Tarpinian  was among those who took part in the event which was underwritten by Cablevision.
