FEMA Deadline Extended For Sandy Victims

Gov. Cuomo announces that residents across Nassau and Suffolk can register for assistance until January 28.

Local residents seeking assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will have additional time to file a claim.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Monday that the deadline to register for FEMA assistance has been extended from Dec. 31 to Jan. 28, 2013. This covers residents living in the 13 counties — including Nassau and Suffolk — that were declared disaster areas following Hurricane Sandy.

"As we work to help communities get back on their feet, this extension will be a big help to New Yorkers who were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy," Cuomo said. "As we move into the holiday season and start the New Year, this extension will allow affected families and individuals extra time to apply for much-needed assistance to help rebuild and recover."

Individuals can register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Applicants may also call 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Applicants who use 7-1-1 Relay or Video Relay Services (VRS) may call 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.

You are a BARKING idiot. I personally know people that have gotten money from FEMA due to destruction from the storm. One of my buddies has already received $80k.

Yes, they will do that, but if you have flood insurance, you have to go through your insurance co. 1st unless it is something they don't cover like temp housing. Vital repairs are limited, such as temp electrical work. Loans-yes, but most people are lost in this sea of paperwork & legal-like wording. If your boiler & wiring was indundated with salt water (EVERYONE!), then you need a new one (10K maybe) and have your wiring all redone. They won't pay for that-how many people do you know have that kind of money lay out until ins. co. comes through?

$80K for what? Did he have flood insurance? Was it a loan? home or biz? That information would be helpful.

Linda - read the document that you posted. They WILL pay for boiler and wiring, since it's essential to the heating system of a home. I don't know what document you're reading: L. Shelter Essential Measures – Shelter Essential Measures are intended to provide electricity, heat, and hot water to disaster-impacted residences to meet basic life-sustaining needs so that occupants may shelter-in-place until more permanent repairs can be made. RECOVERY PROGRAM GUIDANCE Page 6 of 7 1. Eligible work may include measures necessary to provide essential electrical supply, heat, and hot water and necessary inspections. 2. Measures taken under this program may not necessarily provide permanent repair to a residence’s electrical infrastructure, or restore electricity to all portions of the residence. 3. Damaged portions of the electrical system not essential to restoring the electrical supply to the meter and into the residential unit may be disconnected from the utility as an eligible expense of this program.
