Whether you're in your 20's or fast-approaching your 50's, maintaining clear skin can be something of a challenge. Dr. Marina Peredo, a board certified dermatologist in Smithtown, shares her tips on how women of all ages can achieve clear, beautiful skin.
20’s
Your 20’s is when a lot of women are still trying to figure out a good regimen for their skin type. Get into the habit of a 3-step skin routine and make sure to follow it morning and night. Cleanse, tone, moisturize and use a sunscreen in the
morning. It’s common to still be experiencing breakouts at this age, so try
incorporating a product that contains Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid to
help keep breakouts at bay. Also try serums and gels that help control oil
production. Do not go to sleep with makeup on, as this can wreak havoc on your
skin for days.

30’s
For something that will show results faster, try getting peels or facials once a month. These help to exfoliate the skin, ridding it of dead skin cells and bacteria that may be clogged in pores. Continue your skin regimen on a daily basis. This will keep your skin "in check” and keep your skin looking young and feeling fresh. Be sure to drink a lot of water as other drinks such as coffee and
soda can cause break outs.

40’s
As we age, our skin becomes more delicate. It’s important to steer clear of products that are harsh as they can do more harm than good. As always, make sure to keep your skin hydrated. Excessive dryness can bring on unwanted wrinkles and flakiness. Use an eye cream for the delicate under eye areas which help to keep eyes looking young. Sun-damage is also more common during this age period, so use products containing retinol to help boost even skin pigmentation.
50’s
This is the age when a lot of women are entering menopause which can often bring on acne. Use an oil-free cleanser and anti-aging moisturizer to help fight against these stubborn breakouts. It’s also important to tone the skin which helps to open the pores and even skin tone. As we age, skin has a tendency to become dryer. Invest in a good skincare product that contains peptides, antioxidants and growth factors. Sun damage and wrinkles become more apparent, so use products that contain retinol and always incorporate sunscreen in your morning cleansing ritual.
