Quick Hits: NY Wraps Up Yard Opening Day 2011

A quick look at how two of the six teams fared on Yard Opening Day.

There were new walls, new team names and some new faces, but a familiar narrative played out on the field as the New York region of Golden Stick Wiffleball kicked off its third season today on the rain soaked soccer fields at Cedar Creek Park early Sunday morning.

Say Hello to the Bad Guys

The two time defending national champions of medium pitch wiffleball, the Enemy, dominated the day, outscoring their opponents 70-2 in five games.

The five man team of Dave "Dweg Wegrzyn, Kevin Norris, Ty "Tweg Wegrzyn, Sean Handahl and Joe Purcell showed no mercy to their opposition mashing out 66 hits, including 11 home runs and driving in 67 runs in just 107 at-bats.  On the mound, the guys allowed the two runs on just nine hits while striking out 27 batters in 16 innings of play.

While their victories came against teams ranked in the lower half of the region, the Playaz, Mercenaries and Hammerheads, it is not as if this group has anything prove to anyone on the medium pitch field at this point.

The First Lady of NY

Melissa Medina made history as she became the first woman to play in the New York region of GSWL.  Medina made her debut as a member of the NY Playaz, who went 1-4 on the day.

Medina had a true baptism by fire in the first four games, squaring off against two of the best teams in the league, the Enemy and the Hooligans.  The former softball player struggled in the early going against the Enemy and the arms of Norris and Dweg, going 0-5 with three strikeouts.

Her first hit came in her third game, against the Hooligans, picking up a base hit.  She added two walks in her fourth game.  However, the highlight of the day for Medina was her go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the third inning against the Mercenaries that gave the Playaz a 2-1 lead. Pitcher Sean McRae made the lead stand up, and shut down the Mercs in the top of the fourth to seal the victory for Medina and the Playaz (Yard games are four innings long).
