Miss Wantagh Application Deadline Extended

High school teens who reside in Wantagh have until June 7 to get applications in for annual pageant.

The deadline for applications to take part in the 2013 Miss Wantagh Pageant has been extended.

The initial deadline was May 31 but Miss Wantagh Pageant coordinator Ella Stevens said she has has decided to give an extra week for high school students who reside in Wantagh to get their applications in. The Miss Wantagh Pageant dates back to 1956 and is designed to rewards teens who give back to their local community.

"In observance of the Memorial Day weekend with the schools off an extra day, the Miss Wantagh pageant committee decided it would be best to give potential Miss Wantagh applicants an extra week to get in their applications,” Stevens said.

Applications are available at Wantagh High School, the Wantagh Public Library, on the Miss Wantagh Community page. Applications can also be requested by email at misswantagh@optimum.net or the Miss Wantagh Facebook page. To submit an application electronically, visit:  http://www.wantagh.li/misswantagh/application.htm.

After a ceremony for the Miss Wantagh Pageant is held on July 1, the winner will be announced during a ceremonial crowning in front of Wantagh Elementary School immediately after the traditional Wantagh Fourth of July parade.

“A lot of preparation goes into creating this pageant,” said Miss Wantagh Pageant co-coordinator Donna Hartofilis. “Fortunately, we have been very lucky to have former Miss Wantaghs and Miss Wantagh finalists serve on our committee; each one of them work hard to make it a very exciting event. “It’s an effort of love for these ladies, many of whom have moved away to college, yet are excited to return and work on this project.”

Stevens explained that a new Miss Wantagh tradition started two years ago that actively involves the finalists’ mothers has been a huge success.

“This was a tremendous help and the moms were fantastic,” Stevens said. “We hope to continue this successful program and perhaps add yet another tradition to this wonderful event.”
