Secrets of the South Shore: Inside a Long Island Mystery

It's totally off limits to the public, but Stacey Sweet unlocks the mystery in our special series, Secrets of the South Shore.

What sits in a traffic circle at the Wantagh Parkway, and is the most debated, most misunderstood, and most talked about 231-foot landmark on the South Shore? It's an age old question...what exactly is it? And is there anything inside? We went on a quest for the answers. Along the way, we discovered the history, the beauty... and maybe even a few ghosts!

This story was told in such an upbeat yet interesting way -- the writing was superb and each shot was positioned perfectly. You are all experts when it comes to production value. So well done! Please do more! What are your backgrounds in broadcast journalism?

This is a great story and we knew that it is a water tower but nice to see inside.. would have been nice to know what the recent renovation did though....and finally something strictly local --- Long Island, Bellmore/Wantagh in particular! This Stacy is the first video reporter on Patch that seems to be a real reporter, professional and a true free spirit.

I grew up with this tower (The Pencil) and I think I always knew it was a water tower. Seeing the inside was a first- very interesting to see the contrast of in/outside. Also nice to have it by video, rather than just lots of photos. We really get the feel of it being like a cellar, and musty. Even the water on the floor. Thank you Patch!
STACEY SWEET August 11, 2011 at 10:30 pm
thank you bobbie!

I remember the tower from many years ago.I think I always knew it was a wter tower. We used to have the greatest times at Jones Beach. I went there after I got married also used to go to roller skate and to the dances at the band shell. Those were good times. Tony Ruvolo
