DO YOU HATE YOUR JOB? STAND UP AND BE COUNTED…

DO YOU HATE YOUR JOB? STAND UP AND BE COUNTED…

By Patrick Ingegno

Even as the unemployment rate lingers at unacceptably high levels in the United States, and the chance of finding a career level job that will pay you a living wage with medical benefits and a pension plan is close to zero, a Gallup poll of workers, who actually have a job, in 142 countries worldwide found that about 90% hate their job.  Hate may be a strong word but a better definition, as described by the Gallup people, is actively dis-engaged and unlikely to make a positive contribution.  Overall, this means that nearly one billion working people throughout the world are actively dis-engaged from their work place.  Is it any wonder that products and services across all aspects of our everyday life are substandard?  Have you tried to sharpen a pencil lately? Any pencil; for any reason…First off  the pencil sharpeners are mostly cheap, thin plastic with a useless blade and the pencils are made of wood fragments glued together by a machine or worse yet, plastic.  No one knows what is in the pencil where the lead used to be but a simple pencil is nearly impossible to use because it is so badly made.  This is just an example of a product that can no longer be produced with the same quality of which we have become accustomed.  Many products that are part of our daily life are becoming useless because of the poor quality of their construction.  Do you have a can opener that actually works?

Hey, the good news is that only three quarters of the workers in the United States are dis-engaged in their jobs; so we are ahead of the world wide average because only three of four workers in the U.S.A hate their jobs.  Even former President Jimmy Carter agrees that “The middle class today has become more like poor people than they were 30 years ago. I don’t think it’s getting any better.”  Neither do I, Mr. Carter.
