Blizzard Causes Closures on Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway

Deteriorating conditions from storm cause authorities to close highway in both directions at Exit 14.

Deteriorating conditions  on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (Route 135) caused authorities to close two trouble spots early Friday evening.

The expressway was closed in both directions at Exit 14, Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury at 6:30 p.m. because of the snow.

The southbound exit ramp from the Long Island Expressway was also closed, police said.

Driver Michelle Zilberzweig, of Bellmore said she had driven on the LIE ramp just minutes before it was closed and said conditions were treacherous.

"It was horrific," she said. "I must have passed about seven accidents on the way."

Zilberzweig said her commute from Queens lasted several hours longer than normal.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.

True, true, I'm sure there's a political payoff/payback here somewhere.

A tantalizing, mind-teasing story about a faceless team with no names who won honorable mention forRead More some project about which we learned absolutely nothing from this article. Journalism 101: Who what, why when and where?
