Contested Fire District Race on Tap in Wantagh

Incumbent Commissioner Jay Cohen being challenged for seat by Lieutenant David Goetz; Uncontested race in Seaford.

Local fire district elections are on tap for this Tuesday with one contested race and another that is unchallenged.

Wantagh Fire District incumbent Commissioner Jay Cohen, who is running for another five-year term, is being challenged by Lieutenant David Goetz. Cohen is a 38-year member of the Wantagh Fire Department and ex-captain of Engine 8. He started his firefighting career with engine Company 8 and continues to be assigned to that unit.

Lt. Goetz of is part of the fire police unit who has served with the Wantagh Fire Department for five years.

In the neighboring Seaford Fire District, Commissioner Peter Mangiolino opted not to seek re-election. Running unchallenged for Mangiolino’s seat is Robert Powell.

Voting for the Seaford commissioner race is scheduled Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the fire district’s headquarters on 2170 Southard Ave.

Tuesday’s voting hours in Wantagh will be from 2-9 p.m. at fire district headquarters on 3470 Park Ave. in Wantagh; Station No. 2 on 844 Wantagh Ave. in Levittown; Station No. 3 at 2529 Neptune Ave. in Seaford; Station No. 4 at 1191 Alken Ave. in Seaford and Station No. 5 is at 2985 Merrick Road in Wantagh.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
