Cops: All OK After Gas Odor Prompts DMV Evacuation

Massapequa DMV emptied after people report smelling gas.

Officials evacuated the Massapequa DMV Thursday afternoon after reports of the smell of gas in the facility, confirmed Nassau County Police.

Cops and fire officials emptied the Carmans Road facility as National Grid crews secured the scene, officials said.

Police went through with the evacuation after receiving a call at 12:15 p.m. Thursday about the smell of gas, though officials said no leak has yet been reported.

"We arrived on the scene and the [fire department] had turned off two roof units," said Wendy Ladd, a National Grid spokeswoman. "We took readings inside and outside of the building and there were no gas readings. The two units have to be repaired before National Grid will turn them back on."

Cops said all were safely evacuated and that no one involved needed medical attention.

South Farmingdale Fire Department also responded to the scene, reported Newsday.

This is a breaking news story. Patch will update as soon as more information becomes available.
