Couple Rescued From House Fire

Firefighters also find dog hiding in upstairs room, administer oxygen.

A couple trapped on the second floor were rescued Friday evening as a fire spread through their home.

The call was dispatched around 11:30 p.m. to a home on Hawthorne Drive West. All units of the Wantagh Fire Department responded. Police officers found a ladder and were rescuing a woman from a first floor roof as three Wantagh firefighters who live down the street arrived.

Upon learning someone was still inside the home, firefighters Tom Brandon, Dan Brandon and Ex-Chief Jeff Lindgren took the ladder and ran to the rear of the home.

There they found the male owner of the home also on a roof. After safely rescuing the man, he told them the dog was still missing.

Brandon retrieved a sledge hammer from his car and broke down the front door. Heavy smoke prevented him from continuing and additional hose lines were brought in to extinguish the blaze.

The dog was later found on the second floor hiding under a bed. He was brought outside and administered oxygen by fire medics and a son of the owners. He slowly recovered.

A man who also lived in the home escaped on his own through a basement window.

The cause of the fire was undetermined and the investigation is continuing. The two homeowners were taken to NUMC for smoke inhalation by police ambulance and there were no injuries to firefighters.

The Seaford Fire Department also provided a Fast Truck.
