Crimes Nearby: 9/11 Memorial Damaged, Scamming Mechanic Busted

Crimes reported in Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa and Farmingdale.

The following information is taken directly from the Nassau County Police Department's incident reports. None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime.

Wantagh

  • Jonathan Roth appeared in court Friday on bail jumping charges. Roth, the Massapequa man who had admitted to helping his father Raymond Roth fake his death at Jones Beach, was picked up in Ohio Thursday night by bail bondsman, a spokesman for District Attorney Kathleen Rice said. Click here for more.
  • Sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sept. 18, unknown suspect(s) stole the complainant’s bicycle from the side of her house on Jane Street.
  • After 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 17, unknown suspect(s) stole a cell phone off of a display at AT&T Wireless on Wantagh Avenue.
  • Sometime between 1 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 16, the complainant discovered a 1” hole in two of his building’s windows on Wantagh Avenue.
  • On Sept. 20, at 2:20 a.m., John Paul Vitali, 19, of Wantagh, was arrested on Oakland Avenue and charged with DWI, first and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and two violations of the Vehicle and traffic law.

Seaford

  • On Sept. 20, at 5:30 p.m., unknown suspect(s) stole a pocketbook from the complainant’s unlocked vehicle that was parked at Pathmark.
  • On Sept. 23, between 7:45 a.m. and 7:25 p.m., unknown suspect(s) stole the complainant’s bike off of the bike rack on their vehicle while it was parked at the Seaford LIRR Station.

Massapequa

  • Sometime between 9 p.m. on Sept. 19 and 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 20, a car was scratched while parked on North Virginia Avenue in Massapequa.
  • Sometime between 9 p.m. on Sept. 19 and 10 a.m. on Sept. 20, an iPod was stolen from a car parked on Smith Street.
  • Sometime between 4:50 p.m. and 4:57 p.m. on Sept. 16, unknown suspect(s) stole merchandise from Victoria’s Secret.
  • Sometime between 10 p.m. on Sept. 19 and 6 a.m. on Sept. 20, unknown suspect(s) stole a GPS and camera from the complainant's vehicle on North Nassau Avenue. No damage to the vehicle was reported.
  • Sometime between 8 p.m. on Sept. 20 and 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, unknown suspect(s) stole a wallet and cell phone from complainant’s unlocked vehicle that was parked on Tulip Drive.
  • Sometime between 8 p.m. on Sept. 20 and 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, the complainant discovered their backpack stolen from their vehicle on North Hickory Street.
  • On Sept. 22, at 2:55 p.m., unknown suspect(s) stole the complainant's wallet from his vehicle on Clocks Boulevard.
  • Sometime between 10 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 1 p.m. on Sept. 22, unknown suspect(s) stole a registration card from the complainant’s unlocked vehicle on North Oak Street.
  • On Sept. 23, at 10:50 a.m., unknown suspect(s) removed a wallet from the complainant’s vehicle on North Beech street. No damage to the vehicle was reported.
  • On Sept. 17, between 5 p.m. and 5:10 p.m., merchandise was stolen from Victoria’s Secret.
  • On Sept. 20, at 1:05 p.m., a Central Islip woman was arrested for shoplifting at Walmart.
  • On Sept. 20, at 5 p.m., a Hempstead woman was arrested for shoplifting at J.C. Penney.
  • Sometime between 4 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 23, unknown suspect(s) broke five windows at Transmissions Technicians.
  • Sometime between 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 17 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 18, unknown suspect(s) scratched the driver side of the complainant’s vehicle while parked on North Chestnut Street.
  • Sometime between 3 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 11 a.m. on Sept. 23, the complainant discovered damage to the driver side door and dashboard of his vehicle while parked on North Hickory Street.
  • On Sept. 18, at 2:05 p.m., Steven Gozdziewski, 66, of Amity Harbor, was arrested on Sunrise Highway for DWI.
  • On Sept. 20, at 3:39 a.m., Rafael Fernandez, 52, of Massapequa, was arrested on Ann Rose Street and charged with DWI  and a violation of the vehicle and traffic law.

Farmingdale

  • Nassau County police on Saturday said flowers were torn from the ground and interlocking bricks from a retaining wall were also pulled out at the 911 Memorial in South Farmingdale. Click here for more.
  • Nassau County Police arrested a mechanic Monday who they say scammed his employer out of more than $15,000. Click here for more.
  • Sometime between 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 18 and 6:45 a.m. on Sept. 19, an iPod, knife and backpack were stolen from a car parked on Polar Avenue.
  • Sometime between 11 p.m. on Sept. 19 and 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 20, a window was smashed on a car parked at Wild West Bar & Grill.
  • Sometime between 6 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 22, Ralphy’s Garden Center was ransacked and cash was stolen.
  • On Sept. 18, fraudulent cash was found at Citibank in Farmingdale.
  • On Sept. 21, at 3:18 a.m., 7-Eleven, was robbed as the suspect stole cash from the register.
