Inaugural Honor at the Castle Gala to Honor ATF Agent Killed in Seaford

National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund will pay tribute to John Capano during April 24 fundraiser at Oheka Castle in Huntington.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund will be honoring slain ATF agent John Capano during its inaugural Honor at the Castle Gala on April 24 nearly four months after he was  trying to stop a New Year's Eve pharmacy robbery in Seaford.

Proceeds from the April 24 benefit event, scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at Oheka Castle in Huntington, will support the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and their work to build the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, D.C. The family of Capano, a Massapequa resident and  who was a 23-year veteran of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is scheduled to be in attendance at the fundraiser.

Capano was awaiting a prescription for his father in  on 3931 Merrick Road as James McGoey of Hampton Bays entered the store armed, demanding cash and prescription drugs. As Capano confronted McGoey, an off-duty officer responded to the scene which ended in a shootout killing both Capano and the suspect.

"Capano's efforts in attempting to stop and apprehend a violent armed career criminal are the very definition of heroism," the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund said in a statement announcing the April 24 benefit.  

The 2012 Honor at the Castle Gala Honoree is Richard Belzer a comedian, actor and author best known for his role as John Munch on the NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. The fundraiser will be emceed by Mark Feuerstein of the USA show Royal Pains. New York Knicks legend Walt "Clyde" Frazier is also scheduled to attend.
