Islanders Paying Tribute to Fallen Wantagh Officer

The New York Islanders are paying tribute to fallen Nassau County Police Officer Michael J. Califano during Sunday’s home game against the New Jersey Devils.

The Islanders have dedicated their Sunday matinee against the Devils to Califano, who was a 12-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department before tragically losing his life last month. Califano, 44, of Wantagh was while in his patrol car during a routine traffic stop on the Long Island Expressway on Feb. 4 and was later pronounced dead at Nassau University Medical Center. A portion of the proceeds raised from the games’ ticket sales will be donated to the .

First faceoff for the Islanders-Devils game will be at 3 p.m. At 11:45 a.m. the Nassau County PBA hockey team will take to the ice against the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department in a tribute to Califano.

$20 million of the $40 million will be spent on adding a pocket track, presumably east ofRead More Massapequa. Currently, trains are reversed east of the Wantagh interlocking, and while the engineer walks through the train, it blocks the track. This addition of a "pocket track" will probably also help Wantagh commuters some times, just as an emergency pull-over space on the LIE helps.
