Officer Pulls Suicidal Teen Off Overpass

Teen had climbed over a railing at a Wantagh Parkway overpass, police say.

A 16-year-old considering suicide was pulled to safety by a police officer on a Wantagh overpass Wednesday afternoon, according to Nassau County Police.

A Seventh Precinct female officer rushed to the Wantagh Parkway overpass at Merrick Road and found the teen, who had climbed over a railing at about 12:37 p.m., police said. 

Police said the 16-year-old boy was apparently suicidal and considering jumping onto the highway.

The officer started talking to the teen and, when she was close enough, took his arm and pulled him to safety, cops said.

The teen was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Police did not release the identity of the officer.
